Disney Lorcana is a collectible trading card game featuring Disney characters which is published by Ravensburger North America. A collectible trading card game (TCG) involves players using cards with characters, locations, and powers against each other, attempting to lower their opponents’ score to zero. Popular trading card games include Magic the Gathering and Pokemon.
Lorcana made its debut at the 2022 D23 Expo and is scheduled for worldwide release in 2023.
Ravensburger Publishes Disney Lorcana
The Disney Lorcana game is published by Ravensburger North America, the American division of gaming company Ravensburger AG, which is based in Germany. The company’s headquarters is in Seattle, Washington in the Capitol Hill area.
Ravensburger licensed the rights to Disney characters from the Walt Disney Company to be used for the Disney Lorcana game. Lorcana is the first trading card game that Ravensburger has ever published.
The company’s main business is in creating jigsaw puzzles. The most popular game created by Ravensburger is the Disney Villainous board game which was first released in 2018.
Ryan Miller And Steve Warner Co-Designed Disney Lorcana
Ryan Miller is the co-creator of Disney Lorcana and the brand manager for the game at Ravensburger. Miller has over 20 years of experience in the collectible trading card business and previously worked at Wizards of the Coast where he designed products for that company’s Magic: The Gathering game.
Miller also was the head of design for the Duel Masters trading card game at Wizards of the Coast, as well as on theKaijudo Trading Card Game. Miller designed the trading card game based on the cartoon Digimon.
Miller created the Warhammer 40,000 Collectible Card Game while working at Sabertooth Games.
In an interview with The Gamer, Miller said of Lorcana: “We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We want to be a player in this space. We want to bring an awesome experience to the trading card game space. We’re not talking much about the product line right now, but I don’t think you’ll be super shocked when you see it.”
Steve Warner is the co-designer of Disney Lorcana. He works as the lead game designer at Ravensburger and he worked on the design of Lorcana from start to finish there.
Before working on Lorcana, Warner was a game designer at Tonk Tonk Games working on the mobile fighting game uFighter. Like Miller, Warner also worked as a designer at Wizards of the Coast developing additions for trading card games and expansions like Magic the Gathering, Duel Masters, Kaijudo, Dungeons and Dragons, Hecatomb, Uzumajin, Dream Blade, 3 Dragon Ante, Axis and Allies, Race for Rocketville, and Duels of the Planeswalkers.
